In a stunning turn of events at Julien’s Auctions in Los Angeles, an evening dress that once graced the elegant shoulders of the late Princess Diana has shattered records, fetching an astounding $1.1 million.
The black and blue ballerina-length gown, a creation by designer Jacques Azagury, surpassed all expectations by selling for an astonishing 11 times its initial estimate, setting a new benchmark for the highest price ever paid for one of Princess Diana’s dresses, far surpassing the previous record of $604,800.
Princess Diana first adorned the iconic dress during a memorable evening in Florence in 1985. A year later, she captivated Vancouver with the same exquisite ensemble, etching her indelible mark on fashion history.
The dress itself, featuring a long black velvet bodice embellished with blue stars and a two-tier blue organza skirt, adorned with a sash and bow, was showcased at Julien’s Auctions as part of the four-day Hollywood Legends sale, a collaborative effort with Turner Classic Movies (TCM).
The auction house, understandably elated by the extraordinary outcome, declared,
Julien’s now holds the new world record for the most expensive dress worn by Princess Diana sold at auction.
Accompanying the sale of the record-breaking dress were other notable pieces from Princess Diana’s wardrobe. A pink chiffon blouse, worn for her 1981 engagement portrait to then-Prince Charles by Lord Snowdon, fetched an impressive $381,000, far surpassing its estimated value of $80,000 – $100,000.
Designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the same creative minds behind Diana’s iconic wedding dress, the blouse now secures its own place in royal fashion history.
The fervor surrounding the auction underscores the enduring fascination with Princess Diana’s timeless style and the continued admiration for her sartorial choices. The record-setting sale stands as a testament to the lasting impact of the People’s Princess on the world, where her grace, charm, and impeccable fashion sense continue to captivate audiences globally.
