Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar at the 16th Annual Governors Awards on November 16 at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
The decision to honor the Top Gun star was made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Joining him are Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas for honorary awards, while Dolly Parton will be awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Academy President Janet Yang praised Cruise, saying,
Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.
Known for reviving box office success with Top Gun: Maverick during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cruise has earned four Oscar nominations for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and Top Gun: Maverick (as a producer).
His notable films include the Mission: Impossible series, Interview With the Vampire, Eyes Wide Shut, Vanilla Sky, Risky Business, and A Few Good Men.
The honorary Oscar recognizes “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to motion picture arts and sciences, or outstanding service to the Academy.”
