Laila Wasti Reveals How She Survived Her Fight Against Blood Cancer [Video]

Cancer is not a joke.

Laila Wasti is a huge name in the Pakistani entertainment industry. But despite being well known, it was only recently that the Pakistani actress only opened up about her long battle with cancer.

The Dilruba actress had been diagnosed with adult acute myeloid leukemia (AML) some 10 years ago. AML is a type of blood cancer in which the bone marrow makes abnormal myeloblasts, a type of white blood cell.

Depending on what subtypes of AML a patient is diagnosed with, they suffer from deformity in either their red blood cells, or in platelets as well.

Laila Wasti opens up

In her appearance on Taroon Se Karien Batein with Fiza Ali, Laila opened up about how she was on a hiatus from showbiz due to her leukemia.

“I was diagnosed with AML back in the US, ten years ago. My blood count had dropped significantly and I was lifted to John Hopkins where I was told that my Leukemia was very rare and that I would go through chemotherapy and radiation.”

The course of her treatment was long. She faced a long hard battle from transfusion rejection to losing her parents. However, her husband remained her anchor during this whole time.

“I needed a bone marrow transplant but none of my siblings matched. However, I was grateful to find 19 donors internationally. But my body couldn’t accept the blood and I fell further ill after the transfusion.”
