Rashida Tlaib Becomes First Muslim Woman in USA To Preside Over House of Representatives

Making history again!!

Rashida Tlaib

Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib is making history again. This time as the first Muslim woman to preside over the floor of the US House of Representatives.

“Not bad for a girl from Detroit that didn’t speak English when I started school & first in my family to graduate high school & college.”

The congresswoman pointed out how her cultural identity and gender made this achievement even sweeter.

Women in general and Muslim women, in particular, are making waves in the United States government after the US mid-term elections.

Previously  Rashida Tlaib made history for being the first Palestinian American woman to join Congress. Both she and Ilhan Omar, are the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

This congresswoman mentioned how this made her proud (why wouldn’t she be!).

“This was a proud moment & it sank in just a little more that I am serving in Congress.”

Female Milestones

Rashida Tlaib’s milestone on Wednesday happened merely days after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez presided over the floor of the US House of Representatives for the first time on Friday.

Cortez, the Latin-American Democrat, became the youngest woman ever to do so. Previously Crisanta Duran became the first Latin woman to do so.

While women in politics is nothing new, women like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Sharice Davids, and Deb Haaland are establishing that women of color are stepping up for representation.

Last year Sharice Davids, and Deb Haaland became the first Native American women elected to Congress. Native Americans are a very small minority in the US but are subject to the most unlawful persecution.

All this ties into America’s multicultural identity despite the fact it has an alt-right wing president.

It also signifies that the future is female!
