Despite having some difficulties in the initial years of his career, Shahid Kapoor has made his name in Bollywood with blockbuster movies like Jab We Met, Kismat Konnection, Kaminey and Haider.

However, there are also some great movies that Shahid declined to be a part of and one of them is The Reluctant Fundamentalist, adapted from Mohsin Hamid’s novel of the same name.

He almost took the role

Director Mira Nair wanted to cast Shahid as the main lead – the post 9/11 contemplative Pakistani in New York – but he turned her down after considering the role for some weeks. Apparently, Shahid wanted changes in the script and was anxious about playing a Pakistani national. The actor moved on, and chose to do Pankaj Kapoor’s (his dad) Mausam instead.

Things did not stop there. In fact, Mira Nair then decided to cast Riz Ahmed, a move that helped the British Pakistani actor gained immense popularity and success.

This was not, however, the only remarkable role that Shahid has declined to do in the past. Prakash Jha’s Raajneeti was first offered to Shahid. But he again had issues with script and Prakash signed Ranbir Kapoor instead.

Then there is the Yash Raj Films’ slice of life, romantic-comedy Shuddh Desi Romance, which was also conceived with Shaid Kapoor as the main lead. Shahid again refused the role and guess what? We were gifted with the talents and visuals of Sushant Singh Rajput.

Anand Rai’s Raanjhanaa was another project that Shahid Kapoor turned down as he didn’t want to play opposite Sonam Kapoor after their romantic duo in Mausam.
