Troubled Childhood, Depression & Marriage: Atif Aslam Gets Candid In a Tell-All Interview

Atif Aslam opened up about his personal struggles in a rare, candid interview

Atif Aslam; a name that reverberates through the hearts of many. Did you know about the struggles that went into achieving this superstardom?

When we look at the life of superstars, we tend to assume that they live such a perfect one. We are mistaken. An example is a superstar like Atif Aslam, who disclosed shocking details about his life, struggles of his career and more, in an interview. He gave a heartfelt account of his life and confessed that everybody has to withstand challenges and difficulties. The true winner is only the one who has the audacity to face those tides valiantly. The Aadat singer opened up about his life struggles in a digital talk show, AB Talks.

Atif Aslam about his troubled childhood

Atif Aslam is the youngest in his family and he believes this is the reason behind his stubbornness as well. He likes doing things his way. However, he wasn’t particularly close to his siblings due to the significant age gap. He also never confided in his parents or showed a lot of physical affection.

“I just knew they love me and I love them,” said Atif. He added, “I have always been a naïve, sensitive kid who would disconnect with the world if not feeling right or in the correct headspace.”

It was at the age of 23 when he went through the loneliest phase of his life. His brother proved to be a saviour during that time. He introduced him to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. NFAK’s music became a source of healing for the superstar and so began his inclination towards music and spirituality. The singing sensation found a sense of peace and started praying as well.

How did he compose his first song?

The most interesting aspect of the interview was Atif’s revelation about the struggle he went through to compose his first song. After finding the spiritual connection and practising for hours, Atif mustered up the courage to make something of his own.

“I saved and saved all my pocket money to make my first song and then finally uploaded my song on the internet.”

But it was never easy to save all his money. Sometimes Atif asked for lifts, other times walked for hours to reduce the travel cost. He invested the same money into making Aadat. The superstar never looked back from there and started his own musical journey. He formed his first band Jal and the rest was history.

Was Atif really meant to be a singer?

However, well before he discovered his passion for music, Atif wanted to become a cricketer. Like every normal kid, Atif fantasized about playing for Pakistan. Thank god the dream was never materialized, otherwise, we would have been deprived of such a talented singer!

“I took more interest in taking wickets than achieving higher grades.” This led to Atif giving up cricket because like every desi parent, Atif’s parents wanted him to focus on his studies.

Did marriage prove to be empowering?

It’s been 18 years since Atif entered the industry. He has seen many highs and lows but what truly empowered him was his marriage to Sarah Bharwana.

She became the pillar of strength in his life. The Tajdar-e-Haram singer believes that success places you on a pedestal and it becomes difficult to balance married life with it. However, he is grateful for the support of his wife and his fans as it allowed him to stay humble.
