University of Sindh Student

A 25-year-old University of Sindh student was allegedly killed by the police. According to the police, Irfan Jatoi was a wanted criminal in several districts – and opened fire during a police encounter. Locals, however, report that the young man was innocent.

According to details, Irfan Jatoi was arrested by the police on 10th February. The police found him in SU’s hostel in Jamshoro. Allegedly, the University of Sindh student was shot dead in an encounter on Sunday.

The encounter took place on the National Highway, under Jhangro Police Station’s limits. According to the police, Jatoi was a wanted criminal in several districts. Not only this, but he was also an alleged robber and involved in car-lifting.

SSP Sukkur Irfan Samo reported the incident and said:

The police received a tip-off that some outlaws have been seen…with the noticeable intent of committing a robbery.

He also revealed that three of Jatoi’s accomplices are on the run. He also added that the University of Sindh student and his accomplices opened fire on the police when they reached the scene of the crime.

Murder or Violent Encounter?

Police are collecting reports on Jatoi’s other reported crimes from several districts. However, friends and family say that Jatoi was innocent. The family alleged that the police picked Jatoi and 2 of his friends from SU’s International Hostel. He had been missing since 10th February and the police were demanding money for his release.

But a police source says otherwise – according to him, Jatoi stole a car that belonged to a Sukkur-based politician.

He had agreed to return the vehicle but backtracked on his promise after which he was arrested.

Pakistani activist Mohammad Jibran Nasir took to his Twitter account to share the news. He wrote:

A young man named #IrfanJatoi has been found dead & claimed by Sukkur Police to have been killed in an encounter and was wanted criminal whereas many claiming on social media that he was abducted from Sindh Uni few days ago. An internal inquiry must be held by IG under Sec 5 ATA.

In addition to this, he called for the Chief Minister of Sindh, Syed Murad Ali Shah, to take an action and look into this matter.

@CM_Sindh is also Home Minister. @MuradAliShahPPP ‘s office must issue a statement on this encounter which has seemed to raise many questions. History of encounters in Sindh is tainted with repeatd abuse of power & encounter specialists enjoying undue patronage of Govt #IrfanJatoi
