RAWALPINDI: Three commercial plazas in Shamsabad and Faizabad have taken steps towards easing traffic congestion by restoring their basements as parking areas.
This comes after the owners voluntarily removed illegal showrooms and warehouses from these spaces in accordance with the approved plan.
Jameel Corporation Faizabad, Farooq Corporation, and Ariz Tower Shamsabad are among the plazas that have restored their basements.
At the occasion, Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha mentioned that 20 such plazas on Murree Road and Satellite Town had built shops in their basements meant for parking, causing severe traffic jams as customers have no choice but to park their vehicles on the roads.
Chatha explained that two notices have already been issued to the owners of such plazas, and a final notice will be issued next week.
If they fail to restore the parking areas in the basement, FIRs will be filed against them.
According to the commissioner, the lack of parking facilities in big commercial plazas is a significant cause of traffic congestion on Murree Road.
He stated that plaza owners have violated the approved plan and built shops and offices in the basement, prioritizing their financial interests over public convenience.
The commissioner assured that the operation against encroachment in commercial plazas would be completed soon.
If the owners do not restore the parking areas in the basement despite the FIRs, the Metropolitan Corporation will demolish illegal structures in these plazas.
Chatha commended Jameel Corporation, Farooq Corporation, and Ariz Tower for voluntarily restoring the parking areas in their basements.
The Ariz Tower’s basement, which covers an area of about eight kanals, was cleared of garbage and building waste by the Metropolitan Corporation.
The commissioner also announced that a comprehensive operation against encroachments had been launched to make Murree Road a model road.
