LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced a plan to modernize the country’s irrigation system, which is being funded by the World Bank with a total of Rs. 68 billion.
As per the details, the project is aimed at saving one million acre-feet (MAF) of water per year for agriculture purposes and is expected to directly benefit over 1.3 million farming families in the province.
The five-year plan is being called a revolutionary program for sustainable agriculture development and will ensure the efficient use of available water resources.
According to sources, the World Bank is providing over Rs. 45 billion in funding for the project, which will not only offset the impact of climate change on agriculture but will also enhance agriculture production by 25% and save 20% of water.
The details suggest that the project will install high-efficiency irrigation systems on 40,000 acres and solar systems on 20,000 acres, providing employment opportunities for 5,000 youth.
The spokesman stated that the project would improve the water distribution mechanism as the initiative will bring significant improvements to the country’s agricultural sector and lead to sustainable development.
