LWMC Launches Pilot Project for Waste Segregation

LAHORE: Lahore’s Waste Management Company (LWMC) has launched a pilot project for solid waste segregation in a bid to reduce waste dumping pressure on the Lakhudair landfill site and generate revenue.

The project called the “waste segregation enclosure,” has been initiated in four union councils and will be expanded to other councils if successful.

The project involves separating the waste into different categories at household and commercial entities levels to dispose of useless waste at the landfill site and sell the useful waste for revenue.

The selected union councils have set up waste enclosures with separate bins for useful and useless waste segregation.

LWMC Managing Director, Babar Sahib Din, stated that the project’s success depends on citizens’ cooperation.

Therefore, the LWMC is running a public awareness campaign for proper waste disposal and better waste management, urging citizens to start waste segregation at their homes.

The green waste obtained from the enclosures will be utilized at the LWMC compost plant.

In the new waste management model, a lesser amount of waste will be dumped at the landfill site, significantly reducing environmental pollution and public health problems.

MD also added that the waste segregation project aims to train workers on waste segregation and will be a landmark initiative toward waste management through innovative methods.

As the waste increases with each passing day, proper waste management is a matter of concern for the city.
