Peshawar High Court Dismisses Petition Over Ownership of Raj Kapoor’s Haveli

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court has dismissed a petition filed by Saeed Muhammad seeking ownership of Raj Kapoor’s Haveli located in the historic walled city of Peshawar.

The Haveli, declared a national heritage by the provincial government in 2016, is in a dilapidated condition and its current owners have expressed interest in demolishing it to construct a commercial plaza.

However, the provincial archaeology department wants to preserve the mansion due to its historic importance.

The petitioner’s counsel had argued that the late Raj Kapoor and his family never lived or owned the property and that the petitioner’s father had purchased the mansion in 1969.

The court, however, dismissed the case, stating that the matter ought to be taken to a civil court.

Raj Kapoor’s ancestral home, Kapoor Haveli, was built by the actor’s grandfather, Dewan Basheswarnath Kapoor, between 1918 and 1922. The actor and his uncle, Trilok Kapoor, were born in Haveli.
