Nasla Tower Scam: Former SBCA DG Appears to Receive Bail

KARACHI: Manzoor Qadir Kaka, the former Director General (DG) of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), who had been on the run in connection with the Nasla Tower case, appeared before an anti-corruption court on Wednesday.

Surprisingly, Kaka managed to secure interim pre-arrest bail during the court hearing.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) had booked Manzoor Qadir Kaka and Ashkar Dawar, both former SBCA directors general, along with 19 others, in January of last year.

As per the details, the charges against them include fraud, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and corruption.

Manzoor Qadir Kaka had been declared a proclaimed offender in the Nasla Tower case due to his consistent absence from trial proceedings.

However, upon his return from abroad, he obtained protective bail from the Islamabad High Court to avoid immediate arrest.

During the recent court appearance, Kaka, accompanied by his counsel Iftikhar Ahmed Shah, filed an application seeking interim pre-arrest bail.

The counsel argued that the former SBCA DG was willing to cooperate with the investigation and face the charges, but he feared arrest in the present case.

Taking the arguments into account, the judge decided to grant Kaka bail, provided he submitted a surety of Rs. 500,000.

Besides, the court adjourned the hearing until July 31 when the bail will be confirmed or otherwise.

In the Nasla Tower case, the court had already indicted 17 accused, including former and serving officials of the SBCA back in March.

It is worth noting that the case against Manzoor Qadir Kaka and others includes charges under sections 420, 409, 468, 471, and 334 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) read with Section 5(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, registered on behalf of the state.
