KARACHI: Engr Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chapter, declared that protest demonstrations will be held on July 31 to address the deepening water crisis in the megacity.
During a press briefing on Sunday, Rehman accused the Sindh government and the mayor of disconnecting “legitimate” domestic water connections in certain selected areas of the city as a punitive measure against those who voted against the ruling party, under the pretext of cracking down on illegal water connections.
The targeted areas, including North Karachi, New Karachi, and Surjani Town, were allegedly chosen as part of a ‘political vendetta,’ according to Rehman.
He stated that the JI intends to expose this plan, which he believes is detrimental to the citizens.
Furthermore, he blamed the 15-year rule of the PPP in Sindh for corruption and incompetence, leading to the ongoing water crisis in the city.
Rehman emphasized that the acute water shortage, unfair water distribution, and support for water theft and the tanker mafia, have caused frustration among the residents of Karachi.
He added that the JI is determined to stage robust protests to address the pressing issue of the acute water crisis.
Rehman criticized the government for burdening the already struggling lower-middle class while providing tax exemptions to feudal lords.
He also expressed concern over the recent increase in electricity tariffs, which would adversely affect many Karachiites, as fewer individuals fall under the category of consumers using less than 200 units.
