LAHORE: A case of fraud amounting to millions of rupees has recently come to light in Punjab, revealing the disappearance of tax collection records related to property transfers within the province.
According to sources, the extensive fraud, exceeding Rs. 200 million, has been exposed across nine divisions of the province.
The investigation has unveiled a shocking revelation that the records of tax collection on property transfers at registered branches throughout Punjab have gone missing.
Responding promptly, the Senior Member of the Board of Revenue has issued directives for a special audit to delve into the matter.
The investigation’s findings indicate that a staggering 55,441 registries’ records are unaccounted for across Punjab’s registry branches.
During the ongoing investigation phase, records for 25,441 registries have been located, leaving a significant gap of 30,000 registries still missing.
As per the details, the highest count of missing tax records for property transfers is observed in Faisalabad and Multan divisions.
The details suggest that the Faisalabad division reported a discrepancy in records for 37,860 registries, out of which 13,000 registries have been retrieved, while efforts are underway to trace records for over 24,000 registries.
Similarly, in the Multan division, over 10,000 registries’ records were initially missing.
The preliminary investigation has managed to recover 7,000 files, while the search continues for the remaining 3,685.
Interestingly, the Sahiwal division reported the lowest count of missing files, with only 4 files unaccounted for.
In the Lahore division, 1,610 registries’ records were initially missing, but efforts have reduced the count to 353 still unlocated.
Within the Gujranwala division, the initial tally of missing records for 1979 registries has decreased to 81, while the Rawalpindi division’s 643 missing files are now being sought, with 472 files still unaccounted for.
Besides, the search for 549 missing files out of 1257 is actively ongoing in the Sargodha division.
Similarly, in the Bahawalpur division, efforts are directed toward locating 639 out of 875 missing files. In DG Khan Division, a search for 34 files is underway out of 599.
Prompt action has been taken by the Senior Member of the Board of Revenue upon the identification of Member Tax Board of Revenue, Tariq Qureshi.
Moreover, Qureshi has reported that a special audit is currently underway in Faisalabad and Multan divisions to thoroughly investigate this incident.
