Railway Leases out Acres of Land for Revenue Generation

ISLAMABAD: During the previous four years, Pakistan Railways leased out up to 4,694 acres of its land in an effort to increase revenue and turn the department into a lucrative one.

According to a Ministry of Railways official, the leased-out land was located throughout seven divisions, including Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi, Multan, and Sukkur.

The statistical data show that Pakistan Railways owns a total of 167,690 acres of land, 90,326 of which are in Punjab, 39,428 in Sindh, 28,228 in Balochistan, and 9,708 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

He also said that the government was taking measures to reclaim encroached land from the land grabbers.

Furthermore, a thorough survey is also being conducted to determine which encroached land was being used by government agencies and individuals.

The matter of government organizations and departments illegally occupying railways land has also been brought up with the relevant departments, he added.
