World Bank Announces $1.3 Billion Relief Package for Flood Affectees

ISLAMABAD: The World Bank announced on Wednesday that it would give Pakistan $1.3 billion for housing, agriculture, and emergency relief following devastating floods.

As per the details, John A. Roome, regional director of the World Bank for Sustainable Development, announced that the bank would also offer financial assistance to farmers in Pakistani flood-affected areas.

According to a press release, the regional director of the World Bank met with Tariq Bashir, the minister for national food security and research, and informed him about the bank’s board meeting in December.

Tariq Bashir Cheema, briefing the director, stated that heavy rains and floods had caused enormous losses for the farming community and emphasized that the government was working to help the struggling farmers.

Furthermore, he also acknowledged the assistance provided by the World Bank for flood relief and the rehabilitation of the afflicted farmers, adding that the natural disaster was unforeseeable, and the farmers needed assistance to recover and resume their normal lives.

Besides, the minister pledged the ministry’s full support for the World Bank’s projects and activities in Pakistan, and said that providing aid and relief to the farming community would contribute to achieving food security.

In addition, it was also assured that a digital application created by the National Flood Response Coordination Centre (NFRCC) would assist in getting information about farmers.
