RAWALPINDI: The broken Transit Camp bridge, which connects the city and cantonment regions, is now being repaired, however with the collapse of the Punjab Assembly (PA), the project’s future is questionable.
As per the details, the Punjab government has provided a grant-in-aid for the project, and Pakistan Railways and the Cantonment Board are assisting with the bridge and road repairs.
A representative of the district administration stated that the project’s funding had been released and that construction would not cease.
The sources told that a few weeks ago, digging was done at the site, and this caused complications for road users, particularly drivers heading towards Saddar from Westridge, Bakery Chowk, and other regions.
Furthermore, the railway workers who live in the nearby Railway Colony at Bakery Chowk claimed that getting to work was difficult for them as well.
Besides, an employee of Pakistan Railways commented that it was tough to drive a motorbike on the route from Transit Camp to the railway station in the early morning and late at night.
The usage of the road was problematic, according to sources, since the road was just two or three kilometers long overall.
When contacted, Pakistan Railways Divisional Superintendent Inamullah told the sources that work on the road from the railway station to Transit Camp had been started along with the repair of the bridge.
He asserted that the cantonment board and city government ought to close it for heavy traffic when the bridge is repaired as it would only be suitable for minor traffic.
He said that the bridge might be utilized for the next 25 years provided large trucks were prohibited.
It should be noted that Pakistan Railways shut down the deteriorating bridge over its major track between Rawalpindi and Peshawar last year because the local government and the cantonment authorities were unable to make repairs.
After its embankment wall fell in September, the railway authorities deemed the bridge hazardous and people have been struggling since they had to travel a great distance as a result of the bridge’s closure to access the cantonment regions, particularly to get to Peshawar Road.
