CDA Faces Backlash Over Controversial Road Project in National Park Area

ISLAMABAD: The members of the civil society, along with Climate Change Minister Sherry Rehman, have raised concerns and criticized the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for its plan to construct a road in the national park area, specifically from Pir Sohawa to Bari Imam.

They argue that such a project would destroy the ecosystem and is not in line with the CDA’s mandate or existing rules.

Minister Sherry Rehman tweeted, stating that constructing a road through a green area designated by the Wildlife Board is against wildlife laws and international commitments.

She emphasized that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Climate Change, not the CDA.

In February of this year, the CDA expressed its intention to build a road from Pir Sohawa to Bari Imam.

However, before moving forward, the CDA chief sought feedback from citizens through a tweet, asking whether a road should be planned from Peer Sohawa to Bari Imam and 3rd Avenue to create a traffic loop.

Moreover, many individuals, including the climate change minister, opposed the idea, urging the CDA to abandon the plan.

Critics argued that constructing a road through a national park is not an appropriate solution for traffic congestion.

They also emphasized the importance of preserving green spaces, forests, and parks, while some even suggested alternative measures like implementing a shuttle service and minimizing vehicular traffic to protect the environment.

On the other hand, some users supported the CDA’s proposal for the construction of the road in the national park.

When contacted, the CDA chief clarified that no final decision had been made regarding the project.

He stated that he intended to gather feedback from citizens before proceeding.

Besides, he emphasized the importance of public input and mentioned that any road construction would require the approval of an Environmental Impact Study.

  1. Surely road should not be build. It would be disaster to wild life and natural beauty

  2. Instead of road CDA should develop Chair lift of high speed ,high density heavy duty system of international system to carry tourist from base parking to top.
2.Road travels shall be charged with high fees toll tax at least Rs.500 per person.
3.No further road widening be allowed in any case.

    1. Ok Sir Tariq,

I’ll get this proposal signed by the chairman CDA and start execution of this project as soon as possible.

  3. A suggestion made by Mr Tariq is most appropriate a chair lift from pir Shawa or Daman e Koh to Shakar parian/ Rawal Dam should be for genral publis at very reason able rates. It will also improve te traffic problem for Murree hills.

  4. Its National park area no more road be allowed. However cars should be parked at F-9 park and Eelectric vehicles by cda /private sector to take people monal etc.

  5. No road should be developed/extended/enlarged in green area/national park. A shuttle/cable car for picking tourists from base to top may be a good idea but it should be international standards.

  7. I strongly oppose the construction of road in the protected area of park because road construction will disturb the ecology of the area and millions worth biodiversity habitats.Islamabad is a city full with roads and other infrastructure and there are number of alternatives to solve the traffic congestion and better option is to avoid such area even in walk because of the disturbance of the ecosystem and habitats of the wildlife. The other option is to leave the area wild as possible andif

  8. No need of further infrastructure and use the existing one with more efficiency. Our country is indebted country and instead to save the resources our government is in the race of electric vehicles and the IMF money is used in such a notorious projects.we should spend the loan money in developing technology and more research work to modernize our thoughts not the infrastructure. Good step of Shery Rehman.keep it up
