CM Punjab Hints at Building Two Dams on River Chenab

LAHORE: On Tuesday, Dr. Riina Kionka, the EU’s ambassador called on by Chief Minister Punjab, Chaudhry Parvez Elahi, to discuss fostering international cooperation in various areas, particularly the building of new water reservoirs and mini dams.

The CM stated that his government intended to construct two dams on the Chenab River, adding that mini dams would also be constructed to hold back Koh-e-Suleman hill torrents.

He insisted that these projects would benefit from the technical assistance provided by the EU.

The EU ambassador expressed regret over the lives lost and the damage caused by the floods and promised to review the EU’s support for dam-building projects.

The Punjab government will be more cooperative in the areas of manufacturing, small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), and textiles, the CM assured.

Besides, the ambassador was also briefed about the enforcement of labor laws and steps taken to protect workers’ rights and the welfare of the children, adding that, social security hospitals had also been built for workers and their families, with free treatment.

Daniel Clauss, the first consular of the EU, Advisor to CM Hasnain Iftikhar, Principal secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti, the finance secretary, and other officials were also present during the meeting.
