KARACHI: A tragic incident occurred during an anti-encroachment operation in Surjani Town on Tuesday as an excavator driver was shot and killed by unknown individuals.
The operation was being carried out on the orders of the high court to vacate some industrial plots that had been encroached upon.
According to officials, the land grabbers reacted violently to the operation, resulting in the excavator driver being shot.
The Surjani Town police confirmed the incident but did not provide any further details. The body of the driver was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal procedures.
The Sindh government’s Anti-Encroachment Cell had launched the operation with the help of Rangers and police, and the land grabbers’ violent reaction resulted in the loss of the driver’s life.
However, the law enforcement agencies did not back down and continued with the operation, demolishing more than 90% of the encroachments.
Four suspects were taken into custody by the police, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
The tragic event highlights the dangers that anti-encroachment operations can pose to those involved, but also underscores the importance of removing illegal encroachments and restoring the rule of law.
