KARACHI: A sudden fire at the K-Electric grid station on Khayaban-i-Ittihad caused a power outage in various Defence Housing Authority (DHA) areas.
The residents were alarmed as black smoke billowed from the grid station, indicating a serious incident.
As a result, electricity remained unavailable for several hours in phases V, VI, VII, and VIII.
The affected areas included 26th Street, Seaview and Darakhshan Townships, Khayaban-i-Mujahid, Khayaban-i-Shaheen, Khayaban-i-Muhafiz, Khayaban-i-Muslim, Khayaban-i-Hilal, Khayaban-i-Nishat, Khayaban-i-Rahat, Khayaban-i-Sehar, Khayaban-i-Shujaat, and Khayaban-i-Bukhari.
According to sources, the residents contacted K-Electric to inquire about the situation and were initially informed that it was a minor incident and repair work was underway.
They were given an estimated time of 1 pm for power restoration. However, as 1 pm approached without electricity being restored, they were informed to expect it back around 2 pm or 3 pm.
Although most residents reported having their power restored after 3 pm, some experienced prolonged outages until late at night.
Those who were unaware of the grid station fire expressed frustration at the unannounced load shedding, which K-Electric clarified was not intentional through their social media channels.
According to a K-Electric spokesperson, the power supply to the affected areas was fully restored by Sunday afternoon.
The grid station had undergone a temporary shutdown to facilitate restoration work, and electricity was rerouted from nearby grid stations to the affected areas through alternate channels.
