GB Land Reforms Committee Holds First Meeting to Address Illegal Land Occupation and Unrest

GILGIT BALTISTAN: Chief Minister Khalid Khurshid held the first meeting of the Gilgit-Baltistan Land Reforms Committee on Thursday (Today).

According to the details, a group of 14 individuals was tasked with proposing land reforms in the region and addressing illegal land occupation.

The committee received a draft of the “Land Reforms Act” from the Board of Revenue, which members may discuss.

The Chief Secretary also requested that the Chief Minister of Punjab approve a memorandum of understanding between the Board of Revenue and the Punjab Land Record Authority to computerize land records in Gilgit-Baltistan.

These efforts aim to address the unrest surrounding Khalisa Sarkar’s land status.

It is important to note that Khalsa Sarkar is a term used for the land won and occupied by the Sikh rulers in battles.

Furthermore, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have been staging a protest over land ownership as the government claims that the land belongs to the state.

However, it is also mentioned in Pakistan’s land revenue act that any land that the government has freed through battles will be owned by the government and not by the public.

In this regard, the General Secretary of Pakistan People’s Party Diamer Division, Abbas Moosvi, has stated that the land of Gilgit Baltistan had gained independence by the sacrifices of the people of the region, therefore, the Government had no right to claim the ownership of the land.
