ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Housing and Works has declined the request of the inspector general of Police (IGP) Islamabad to reinstate his canceled accommodation in the capital city.
The housing ministry revoked the allotment of the house to IGP Dr. Akbar Nasir Khan in February due to his residency in a designated house in F-7, Islamabad.
The cancellation was made based on an order from the Islamabad High Court (IHC), prompting the Estate Office of the housing ministry to withdraw the allotment.
The IHC had dismissed a petition from a section officer seeking the allotment of a house in G-8, which was also occupied by the IGP alongside his designated residence.
The section officer, Waqas Ali Khan, had been residing in a government accommodation in G-8, originally allotted to his mother.
He filed a petition against the “forced” eviction from the house after the Estate Office allotted it to the IGP.
The petitioner’s counsel argued that the Estate Office had not issued any prior notice before the eviction and requested permission for the officer to retain the house until his wedding ceremony was concluded.
In response, the Estate Office issued a letter on February 1, stating that the allotment to the IGP had been canceled as he was already residing in the IG House of Islamabad Police.
The letter instructed the vacant possession of the house to be handed over to the Enquiry Office, so it could be allocated to an applicant from the General Waiting List (GWL).
On March 14, 2023, Deputy Inspector General Awais Ahmed wrote a letter to the housing ministry, requesting the restoration of the house’s allotment in the name of the IGP.
However, the ministry replied on May 10, stating that the request could not be granted in light of the Islamabad High Court judgment.
It is noteworthy that the IHC’s order stated that no civil servant could retain more than one official accommodation and instructed the IGP to vacate the designated house after taking possession of the G-8 house.
The court also directed the secretary of the Ministry of Housing and Works to survey all civil servants living in Islamabad but posted in other provinces and recommended canceling their allotments.
