Ill-Planned Development in Karachi Causing Environmental Havoc, Warn Experts

KARACHI: At a seminar organized by the botany department of the University of Karachi, experts expressed their concern about the growing environmental degradation in Karachi, largely driven by ill-planned development projects.

According to sources, the speakers specifically pointed out the construction of housing societies that are causing a loss of forests and critical habitats for wildlife species.

The chairperson of the department, Prof. Rubina Abid, regretted the massive deforestation carried out in the name of urbanization and industrialization and highlighted the role of human factors in the degradation of the environment and loss of biodiversity.

Although she didn’t mention any specific projects, the concerns of experts regarding large-scale projects like Bahria Town Karachi, DHA City, and Malir Expressway within the city resulted in widespread tree destruction, as well as the underwhelming role of the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency was also noted.

She emphasized the importance of plant conservation in protecting biodiversity, saying plants are the earth’s lungs and the first component of the food chain.

Furthermore, deforestation, soil erosion, salinity, and waterlogging were identified as major threats to the country’s biodiversity.

Cutting trees is the INVITATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER but no one cares . It vl increase more Heat n more floods in Karachi but all are quite

  3. Conocarpus is the only tree that can thrive in Karachi saline soil. Other trees don’t grow as fast and require a lot care. It has been vilified and chopped off indiscriminately. Now Karachi has reverted to its former self. A barren yellow sandy city.

Some planning of native trees like coconut, neem, bougainvillea etc along with Conocarpus plantation is required.

Locals instead of complain should plant a tree each.

  4. Rampant corruption by Zardari government unprofessional jeeyala staff in Sindh government departments, land grabbing by politically supported Mafias has turned Pakistan’s only Mega city into garbage rubble and it looks like we live in stone age era , Karachi where greenery is hardly seen now because PPP has nothing to do with the future of Pakistan or Sindh their agenda only to loot Sindh s wealth and build properties in Dubai London fill their Swiss bank accounts .
