Karachi Police Clash with Protesters During Anti-Encroachment Drive

KARACHI: Police and protesters clashed in Karachi on Tuesday as the Karachi Development Authority (KDA) began an anti-encroachment operation in the city’s Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.

The operation took place by the directives of the Sindh High Court, which ordered the KDA to clear 30 acres of land from illegal occupation on March 2.

According to SSP East Zubair Nazeer Shaikh, police only used “light action” to disperse the protesters when they put up resistance to the operation.

However, witnesses and rescue service personnel said law enforcement resorted to baton charges and tear gas shelling.

The road near Munawar Chowrangi was blocked due to the protest, with traffic diverted to alternate routes, while no casualties were reported.
