‘KP Cities Improvement Project’ to Boost Urban Environmental Well-Being

PESHAWAR: The Caretaker Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, and Public Health Engineering in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Engineer Amir Durrani, has underscored the transformative potential of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Cities Improvement Project (KPCIP) in bolstering water and sanitation services across 5 divisional cities in the province.

During a recent visit to the KPCIP office in Peshawar, Minister Amir Durrani explained the project’s significance in raising the standards of water supply, sewerage, and sanitation systems within KP cities.

He added that these enhancements would not only benefit citizens’ health but also contribute to environmental well-being.

It is relevant to note that the KPCIP is an ambitious endeavor supported by the Asian Development Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.

Its primary objective is to address critical challenges such as climate change, depleting groundwater levels, and rising health concerns in urban areas.

The project encompasses five major cities: Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Abbottabad, and Mingora.

One of the key initiatives within the project is the Swat Greater Water Supply Scheme, which involves the treatment of water from the River Swat and its distribution to the residents of Mingora City.

Furthermore, streams and springs within these cities will also be directed to treatment plants, ensuring the provision of safe and accessible drinking water to households.
