PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has announced its ambitious plan to develop Thandiani resort in Abbottabad district into an Integrated Tourist Zone (ITZ).
This transformation aims to position Thandiani as a premier eco-adventure tourism destination while focusing on sustainable development and conservation of the natural ecosystem.
The Thandiani ITZ project, to be implemented through a public-private partnership, will cover an expansive area of 49 acres.
According to sources, it will feature a wide range of modern facilities and amenities, including contemporary hotels, condo hotels, serviced apartments, recreational areas, shopping malls, commercial complexes, leisure parks, wellness centers, and family-oriented recreational spaces.
As per the officials, this initiative is expected to boost tourism and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for the local communities.
The project will be divided into four key zones: the central village zone, the destination zone, the northern accommodation zone, and the southern accommodation zone.
Once fully developed, it will become the region’s first well-planned tourism hotspot, adhering to international standards for sustainable development and implementing a comprehensive destination management system.
To attract investors and developers, the government plans to offer tax exemptions and other incentives.
At the same time, strict regulations will be enforced to ensure nature conservation and maintain a pollution-free environment within the area.
Aitezaz Mahfooz, the Divisional Forest Officer of the forestry planning and monitoring circle in Peshawar, emphasized the challenges of preserving the natural ecosystem in hilly areas due to their unique climate and distinct flora.
He also stressed the need to seek expertise from developed countries to establish a robust ecosystem conservation mechanism and coordination among relevant departments to promote environmental protection in tourist hotspots.

KPK government should get eco-tourism advice from countries like Austria and Switzerland.
Best layman advice is to make accommodation which blends with the environment using natural resources and materials like wood and stone.
Structure should not be very high and monstrous.
Please hire an architect who understands what looks aesthetically good in the mountains.
This is a very good innitiative. Please also focus on the road infrastructure to reach there aswell. Roads should be very proper so that risk averse families can also enjoy the spot.
