The Lahore High Court (LHC) has extended the stay on the implementation of Lahore Master Plan 2050 for another two weeks, following a petition filed by a citizen who challenged the plan.
During the hearing, the court expressed concern about the plan’s potential impact on citizens and ordered the city administration to hire an international or local consultant to re-examine the master plan.
The LHC judge also criticized the rapid development of housing schemes on farmlands, which has caused significant losses to the agriculture-based economy.
The petition argues that the proposed cutting down of thousands of trees as part of the plan could lead to catastrophic damage to the environment.
The petitioner also claims that acres of farmland have been converted into urban areas without proper justification.
The court hearing was adjourned for two weeks, during which time the implementation of the master plan will remain on hold.
The Lahore Master Plan 2050 is a long-term plan that lays out the framework for the development of the city over the next three decades.
