LHC Imposes Ban on Tree Cutting, Orders ‘Anti-Corruption’ Cases Against Violators

LAHORE: On Wednesday, Lahore High Court passed an order banning the cutting down of trees in educational institutions and directed environmental authorities to take action against violators under the anti-corruption law.

As per the details, Justice Shahid Karim, while hearing petitions related to smog and environmental issues, stated that relevant authorities must obtain prior permission to cut trees in government and private institutions.

Smog and Traffic Congestion

Besides, including the chairman of the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), a provincial law officer asked the court to permit the government to remove several officers of the departments involved in the smog issue.

The court also directed traffic police to display emergency helpline number boards for traffic and ordered a system for immediate response to traffic congestion complaints.

Lahore Gymkhana Club Lease Case

In addition, the court reserved its verdict on the maintainability of a petition challenging the leasing out of a valuable piece of land to the Lahore Gymkhana Club at a throwaway price.

The petitioner argued that the club had been causing monthly losses to the public exchequer to the tune of billions of rupees, which is against the interest of the public at large.

Justice Karim reserved his verdict on the maintainability of the petition and adjourned the court till the next hearing session.
