LHC Prohibits LDA from Starting New Development Projects in City

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court expressed disapproval of the caretaker chief minister of Punjab’s inauguration of Kalma Chowk Underpass (Extension) one track and suspended the construction work on the Akbar Chowk flyover.

Justice Shahid Karim stated that caretaker governments are not authorized to inaugurate development projects.

The judge also criticized the Lahore Development Authority for the traffic jams caused by ongoing matches of the Pakistan Super League and various construction projects, including the underpasses.

Justice Karim prohibited LDA from starting any new development projects in the city due to the hazardous smog affecting the health of Lahore’s citizens.

It was shared that the judge summoned the chief secretary and the chairman of planning and development to provide a report on the ban on tree felling, and a show cause notice was issued to the chairman of planning and development for withholding funds for the safe disposal of stubble.

Additionally, Justice Karim warned that people involved in tree felling would be imprisoned and issued an order to Lesco to halt tree cutting in the city.

In a separate ruling, Justice Karim also rejected a request for an extension of bakery opening hours during the upcoming fasting month of Ramadan, mandating that bakeries and other shops close at 10 pm.
