Mayor Karachi Takes Action Against 270 Illegal Water Connections

KARACHI: Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the Mayor of Karachi and Chairman of Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation has taken strong action against the issue of illegal water connections in the city.

During an inspection of the 84-inch diameter water line that supplies water to Karachi from Hub Dam, he revealed that there are currently 270 illegal connections in the line.

Out of these, 27 connections have already been disconnected, resulting in the recovery of two million gallons of stolen water.

According to Mayor, the remaining illegal connections will also be disconnected soon.

Every day, ten million gallons of water are supplied to the city from the Hub Dam. However, due to line leakage, three million gallons of water are lost daily.

Mayor Wahab expressed concern about the presence of powerful mafias in the city, which has necessitated the crackdown on illegal connections and hydrants.

He emphasized that this process of improvement will continue, and no one will be allowed to deprive citizens of their rightful water supply.

During the inspection, Mayor was joined by various officials and representatives, including PPP South District General Secretary Karamullah Waqasi, Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation Managing Director Syed Salahuddin, and Chief Executive Officer Asadullah Khan.

He further highlighted that around 90 to 100 million gallons per day of water from the Hub Dam are released into the line, but a significant amount disappears along the way due to illegal connections taken by various communities, societies, industries, and commercial establishments.

Besides, this illegal practice leaves only 10 to 12 million gallons of water per day available for legitimate supply to the public.

The mayor vowed to tackle this issue and ensure that water is distributed fairly to the people of Karachi.
