LAHORE: Punjab Caretaker Local Government Minister Ibrahim Murad has issued a directive to the chief officers of local bodies across the province, urging them to suspend the excavation of new basements within their jurisdictions during the monsoon season.
According to sources, this measure aims to prevent accidents that could result in the loss of lives and property.
Highlighting the potential dangers associated with basement excavation, the minister emphasized the need for safety arrangements to be implemented around under-construction multi-storied buildings.
He further instructed the strict enforcement of building bylaws throughout the construction process of such buildings.
Additionally, in municipal areas, owners of dangerous and dilapidated buildings will be notified to repair these structures.
The minister stressed the importance of vacating extremely hazardous buildings to safeguard precious human lives.
He warned that those who refuse to comply with the evacuation or neglect to repair dangerous buildings will face legal consequences as prescribed by the law.
