ISLAMABAD: The National Highway Authority (NHA) is moving forward with the process of dualizing the 28km Rawalpindi-Kahuta Road and has requested Capital Development Authority (CDA) to issue a no-objection certificate (NOC) for land acquisition for the first package of the project.
The first package, consisting of 16.5km, includes the Sihala Railway Pass, Sihala bypass, and Kahuta bypass.
CDA officials have stated that they have no issue with giving the NHA the NOC, but a small portion of the road may need to be acquired and NHA will need to submit the design for the Sihala bypass.
CDA also requested NHA to provide the design of the project, adding that any CDA infrastructure in the right of way that is damaged will need to be repaired by NHA.
The project, which was launched in 2018 but later almost shelved by the PTI government, is now being focused on again by the PML-N government, with funds allocated in the Public Sector Development Program of 2022-23.
The current two-lane road serves as a major route connecting Rawalpindi and Kahuta and is also utilized by residents of Azad Kashmir due to its connection to the Azad Pattan road.
However, the upgrade to a dual carriageway has been long overdue.
The entire project is expected to be completed in 14 months after it starts and the contractor will be new for package-I.
