Protests in GB Continue Over Land Disputes, Electricity Shortages

Gilgit Baltistan: The people of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) are protesting against electricity shortages, reduced wheat quotas, taxation, and alleged land grabbing by the government.

The demonstrations, which began in late 2022 and continue into the new year, are being led by the Awami Action Committee, a coalition of various political, religious, and trade associations.

According to the details, the issue of land ownership has been a longstanding one in GB, with locals claiming that the land belongs to them as the region is disputed and still needs to be fully integrated into Pakistan.

However, the district administration asserts that land not transferred to individuals belongs to the Pakistani state.

It was shared that the recent protests were sparked by an incident in which the people of Minower, Gilgit, tried to prevent the government from demolishing boundary walls and other infrastructure on land they claim.

The locals have demanded compensation for land given to state institutions and the cancellation of illegal allotments to land developers.
