Punjab Govt Halts Work on Major Development Projects in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government and finance ministry have stopped work on both new and ongoing development projects in Rawalpindi, including the Nullah Leh Expressway, sewage treatment plant, and Rawalpindi Ring Road, until June 30.

This decision has halted work on at least 12 mega projects in Rawalpindi, and funds earmarked for development projects have been withdrawn.

As a result, payments to government contractors will not be made until the end of June.

Sources said that the cost of development projects is likely to increase substantially, and there is no allocation for these mega projects in the new financial year 2023-24.

Work on all mega projects in Rawalpindi has practically been halted, leaving their fate to the next elected government.

The estimated cost of the Nullah Leh Expressway, initially proposed in 2007, has increased from Rs. 17 billion to Rs. 105 billion, with exponential increases expected if further delays occur.

Similarly, the cost of the sewage treatment plant, first envisioned in 2005, has increased from Rs. 15 billion to Rs30 billion.

The 38.3-kilometer Rawalpindi Ring Road project, initiated in 2002, was initially estimated to cost Rs. 22 billion but has now increased to over Rs. 70 billion.
