SC Orders NHA to Compensate Landowners for Peshawar Road Project

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan upheld a ruling by the Peshawar High Court that required the National Highway Authority (NHA) to compensate landowners for land acquired for the Peshawar Road project in 2006.

The court, led by Chief Justice Umer Ata Bandial, also upheld an increase in the cost of land for the Peshawar-Muskat Highway from PKR 35,000 to PKR 70,000 per Marla.

The NHA was instructed to comply with the ruling or face legal consequences, and a deadline for compliance was not specified.

The court approved an investigation into a reported Rs 2.25 billion case of corruption and granted the District Collector of Matiari Rs 4.09 billion to purchase land for the highway.

Additionally, an individual accused of corruption was also granted Rs 1.82 billion by a bank to buy land for a 70-kilometer motorway.
