Senate Committee Visits Farash Town to Evaluate Water Filtration Projects

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Climate Change has recommended that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) takes immediate action to ensure the availability of sufficient water for the residents of Farash Town.

Led by Chairperson Senator Seemee Ezdi, the committee visited Farash Town to assess the Water Filtration Projects implemented by the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) to address the community’s water needs.

During the visit, WWF officials briefed the committee about the dire conditions faced by approximately 3,000 households in Farash Town due to the lack of a proper water system.

The WWF, in collaboration with Australian Aid, has installed two water filtration plants and 350 rainwater harvesting tanks over the past two years to meet the community’s water demand.

Additionally, the WWF is currently working on an ‘Ablution Water Treatment’ project that aims to recycle and reuse ablution water.

Officials informed the committee that the WWF will initially manage the projects for five years and subsequently hand them over to the local community.

However, the committee recommended exploring the use of Soaking Pits as a more reliable and effective solution for rainwater harvesting, compared to traditional water tanks.

During the meeting, members of the local community shared their concerns with the Senate committee and requested the installation of two additional water filtration plants, stating that the existing facilities are insufficient to meet their water needs.

Senator Ezdi personally inspected various water filtration projects and commended the efforts of the WWF in addressing the water requirements of the disadvantaged community.

Besides, she also encouraged the residents to actively participate in this important initiative.

The meeting was attended by Senator Keshoo Bai, Senator Dr. Mohammad Hamayun Mohmand, and WWF officials.
