ISLAMABAD: The authorities have initiated a comprehensive plan to rehabilitate and maintain the damaged section of Simly Dam Road, with an estimated budget of Rs. 74.9 million.
The construction work is scheduled to commence after the Eid festival and the assigned contractor is expected to complete the project within the specified timeframe.
According to officials, the Simly Dam Road serves as a major route, accommodating approximately 50,000 vehicles daily.
However, the road requires significant improvements, including the installation of proper underground water drainage pipes and widening.
Officials from the civic agency have acknowledged the challenges associated with widening the road due to existing structures.
The details suggest that the potential expansion would require significant financial compensation for the affected properties and landowners.
In 2020, a government commission proposed the acquisition of land to widen all revenue roads to a width of 100 feet, as per the revised Islamabad Master Plan.
While an operation was launched to reclaim government land from 146 illegal projects along Simly Dam Road, certain projects had obtained formal approval from relevant authorities.
It is also worth mentioning that to alleviate traffic congestion, the civic agency has imposed a ban on construction activities along revenue routes, including Simly Dam Road.
Given that the revenue roads in Islamabad typically range from 20 to 30 feet in width, the increasing number of housing societies and construction projects has exacerbated the congestion issue.
In addressing this challenge, officials have outlined two options: either acquire land and pay substantial compensation to expand the road by 100 feet or impose a construction ban within a 50-foot radius of these routes.

All illegal construction on both sides of the road must be removed. The authorities should also investigate the illegal hot tapping into Simly dam main pipes and penalize those shop keepers who closed the surface discharge channels on both sides of the road. With leaking illegal water connections and surface water not draining away because of the blocked surface water discharge channels, the stagnant water dilutes the binding agent in the asphalt and this is why Simly dam road (and other roads) is always in a dire state.
