Pakistani Medal Winners at Commonwealth Games Get Cash Prizes & A Warm Welcome

The heroes that made the whole nation proud at the Commonwealth Games have returned home. The wrestlers brought home Pakistan’s only gold and two bronze medals while two bronze medals were bagged by the weightlifters. Pakitan won a total of five medals during the event held in Gold Coast Australia.

Mohammad Inam Butt from Gujranwala defeated Nigeria’s Melvin Bibo in a one-sided bout to clinch the gold medal in the 86kg wrestling category. Inam beat India’s Somveer in the quarterfinals as well before defeating Canada’s Alexander Moore to ensure a place in the semis.

Inam previously won the gold medal in the wrestling category at the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 as well.

The Media Talk

The wrestling team received a warm welcome upon their arrival at Lahore airport. The gold medal winner talked to the media saying;

Both government and private sector should encourage the sport and a proper academy should be established for state-of-art training.

Inam previously criticised the government and sports authorities for the lack of support and investment in the game. He, at the airport, added that Pakistan is capable of winning the gold at Olympics as well if proper attention is given to the game.

Talking about his counterpart wrestler from India, Inam added that they enjoy much better facilities than Pakistani wrestlers do. The wrestler told that Indian wrestlers trained for 6 months in the USA prior to the tournament as well. He further stated that Indians have already started preparing for the next edition of the games.

Inam said that wrestling and weightlifting are two popular and growing games and Pakistan needs to invest in this sector.

Prize Money

According to an announcement, Pakistan Sports Board will pay cash prizes to the winning wrestlers. As per the policy, Inam will be paid Rs 5 million for winning the gold. The bronze medal winners will be paid Rs 1 million each.
