Apple Watch was the Best Selling Wearable in Q2 2018

With the launch of the next Apple Watch (Series 4) apparently coming closer, it is good to look back and see how far the wearable has come in terms of market dominance.

According to a recent IDC report, the Apple Watch was the best-selling wearable in the market, with 4.7 million shipments during Q2 2018 alone, helping Apple earn 17% of the market.

The surge of 38.4% compared to the same period last year could be down to product bundling as well as the launch of the LTE version of the Watch. Apple also sold refurbished versions of it online and has started to phase out Series 1 watches, by ending support for them in WatchOS 5.

It was followed by Xiaomi, which was only 500,000 units behind Apple and captured 15% of the market. However, the price-points of the two companies are vastly different, with the Chinese company primarily making cheaper fitness trackers.

Fitbit came in third place and shipped 2.7 million devices as its decline continues, however, it still shipped 1.1 million smartwatches as it looks to diversify its product lineup. Its Versa smartwatch is already looking like a success.

Huawei and Garmin continued to remain in the playing field, with the former growing by 118% over the year, by expanding its efforts abroad.

Overall, the market jumped by 5.5% to 27.9 million units in terms of shipments, as well as a valuation of $4.8 billion in the second quarter. Much of this growth came out of the developing regions.
