Resident & Overseas Pakistanis Donate Rs. 2 Billion For Dams’ Fund

Resident and overseas Pakistanis responded overwhelmingly to the national cause donating generously nearly an amount of Rs.2 billion in two months on the account of Diamer Bhasha and Mohmand Fund initiated by Supreme Court of Pakistan.

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), the overall value of the donation stands at Rs. 1.99 billion.

The donations received from various cities of Pakistan comprising contributions of individuals and corporations through banking channels and mobile phone service. Donations from overseas Pakistanis received from various countries primarily through credit and debit cards.

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) updated the statistics from July 06 to September 06, however, the collection of the donation was reported only for 40 days due to weekly and Eid Holidays.

The share of contribution from various cities of Pakistan stands at 99 percent or Rs.1.97 billion as compared to the share of overseas Pakistani that stands merely 1 percent in overall fund collection received by the central bank.

Starting from himself Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar donated an amount of Rs. 1 million for the fund.  Sports celebrities like Shahid Khan Afridi and Aamir Khan made pledges to donate Rs. 1.5 million and Rs. 1 million to the fund. There are many philanthropists and businessmen contributed handsomely to the national cause.

Organizations such as HBL donated a sum of Rs. 100 million to the fund. Bank of Punjab and Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry also come forward to donate an amount of Rs. 20 million.

Employees of various organizations donated one or two day salary to the fund including armed forces.

Donations through Mobile Phones

A special service was initiated through mobile phone service for ease of public to donate to the dams’ fund. An amount of Rs. 10 could be donated easily sending an SMS on 8000 with the word Dam.

According to the data, an amount of Rs.57.56 million was received by the central bank from various users of mobile operators by end of September 06.

Jazz with its largest subscribers’ base contributed the amount of Rs. 29.62 million. It is followed by the of Telenor’s users with the contribution of Rs. 11 million. The subscribers of Ufone and Zong donated amounts of Rs. 9.1 million and Rs. 7.8 million through SMS service.

Donations by Overseas Pakistanis

The share of overseas Pakistanis in the overall donation collection was remarkable but its share stands surprisingly at 1 percent with Rs. 21.55 million.

Expatriate from the USA contributed the highest amount of Rs. 5.72 million. Pakistanis living in UK and UAE donated amounts of Rs. 4.19 million and Rs. 4.13 million. Donations from Canada and France stand more than one million, which are Rs. 1.57 million and Rs. 1.38 million respectively.  Besides, none other country surpass the value of Rs. 1 million so far.

The least contribution received from overseas Pakistanis received from Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan, which are Rs. 2,478 and R. 3,000. Surprisingly, donations received from Turkey are merely Rs. 3,500. Donations from China and Sweden are merely Rs. 5,000 and Rs. 7,000.

Efforts are Needed further

The donations of 40 days were impressive from Pakistani considering their purchasing power and expenses on the account of religious obligations that they performed on Eidul Azha during the period.

Their efforts are valuable and can’t match with the values but the truth is that more money is needed from them.

According to an estimate, a construction of Diamer Bhasha Dam will cost nearly Rs. 1.5 trillion. Assume, if an amount of Rs. 20 million is one day, it will take 72,500 days to reach the target or 199 years.

Of course, the government should allocate the budget in this regard and different foreign and local banks could be involved for the construction of dams though being a Pakistani everyone should come forward to participate in the national cause.

It is expected that the recent speech of PM Imran Khan the donations amount will be increased in the coming days and months.

  • We need huge amount of money to build this Dam .Funding is not enough .The government should allocate a percentage of money from the Annual budget to build this dam on urgent basis.Just two Billion rupees have been collected which is good but we need to do that.

  • Rs.1450 billion required in Dam Funds.
Collected until now is just Rs.2 billion.
We need 241.3 billion/month to achieve this amount in 6 months.
That takes us to nearly 8 billion per day.

This amount is huge but not greater than the cause of this nation.
Even small contributions from each of us on daily basis or monthly basis could save us and our generations.

So how can we reach this huge amount?
The current population of Pakistan is 201,488,913 as of Saturday, September 8, 2018.
Imagine half i.e 100,744,456.5 which are 0.1 billion are those who can donate.
An amount of Rs.10 could be donated easily sending an SMS on 8000 with the word Dam.
Rs.10 donation by 100,000,000 Pakistanis mean Rs.1 billion per day.
There are 365 days in a year means we donate 365 billion in a year.
That gives us Rs.1460 billion in 4 years which is well above our target.

    Let’s ease this.
We could donate Rs.300 per month for 4 years.
Or we could donate Rs.3600 per year.
Eventually, we can donate more to reach our target as early as possible.

Nothing is impossible in this World.
To be honest we don’t have any more options left.
This means at least Rs.14,600 required from every Pakistani.

    • Appreciated But Aur Bhi RASTE Hai :
Card Load Pe Tax Directly Jama Karwao Dam Main
2% Addtional Custom Duty Nove 2016 Se Laga Howa hai Nawaz Ne Lagaya tha : Just for Green Bus Project K Liye Industry Her Saal Billions tax De Rahi hai Wo FBR Ko Chahyeh K 2% Ka Sara Paisa Dam Main Add Kare

  • You really need to atleast study the post once before copy pasting it.
Overseas Pakistanis donated Rs 2 Billion and the total donation is 1.99 billion. Is this possible? And then u say that donation of overseas Pakistanis is merely 1% its only possible if the total fund collected was 199 billion not 1.99 billion. Get your statistics right.

  • At least it will give face saving to Niazi and his team that they won’t have to beg IMF to address fast depleting dollar reserves. This “damn” fund will suffer the same fate as of “Qarz utaro mulk sanwaro scheme”.
Stupid awam follows truck ki batti, again and again…LoL
Also, when Pakistan does not own Gilgit Baltistan (GB) as part of the country then how D Bhasha dam can be built there? GB is deprived of legal status since 1948 and we are up to building dams there and enjoy electricity. It’s very unfair.

  • DAm 10 se 12 saal me bante hain ess se pehle nhi ban sakte hain..saara 1400 arab abi nhi chahye..

  • Overseas Pakistanis have huge hurdles in sending money to Pakistan imposed by European and US banks and hence the very poor percentage remitted.

We want to help with all projects in Pakistan. My suggestion is that:

Pakistani overseas branch banks in Europe and the USA/Canada should be the receiving
banks for the funds. This will save £30.00 bank charges imposed by foreign banks per transaction – an amount which we do not want to pay along with our contributions.

The banks should make websites which can facilitate online transmission of funds to the local banks which can then gather and remit the funds to Pakistan.

There should be a central repository where proof of what overseas Pakistanis contributed. is kept with a searchable database to see that their contributions were indeed received in Pakistan.

Each country’s regulatory authorities will be more than happy when full transparency is present.

    • I concur with this idea. Pakistan has been riddled with corruption in the past 30 years thanks to MLN & PPP. To make this transparent, the idea of online deposits to local overseas banks is an excellent idea. Not only will the Dam Funds get an extra £30 per transaction but the donator would be assured that all the monies go where they are supposed to be. In UK various groups have already started collections. I will not donate to any of these groups as there is a perception of foul play. I will willingly donate via an online transfer to a UK bank.
