Worldwide Phone Sales Drop by 2.3 % in Q2 2012

A new report by Research firm Gartner has said that sales of mobile phone unites, worldwide, dropped by 2.3 percent in the 2nd quarter of 2012 to reach 419 million phones units.

Report said that 36.7 percent of total sales were smartphones.

Analysts have blamed the anticipation for the next generation iPhone in Q3 for this decline in worldwide sales. As iPhone launches have already seen long queues, this reason seems valid enough.

Samsung once again dominated the quarter with sales of 90.4 million units and marketshare of 21.6 percent. Nokia was a close second with sales of 83.4 million phones and market share of 19.9 percent while Apple got the third spot with sales of 28.9 million and a marketshare of 6.9 percent.

Samsung’s marketshare increased by 5.3 percent in the last quarter. ZTE and LG came forth and fifth with sales of 17.9 million and 14.3 million and marketshares of 4.3 and 3.4 percent respectively.

Huawei, TCL, HTC, Motorola and RIM wrapped up the top ten.

Sales will most probably increase in Q3 due to the launching of iPhone 5 and Windows Phone 8 smartphones. Q3 will surely be an exciting quarter for the mobile phone industry.

Interestingly IDC, last week, published a report with almost similar stats – creating an impression that sources of data between IDC and Gartner is either shared or is too much identical.
