The Best Video Games: Our Picks of 2014

In the words of Shigeru Miyamoto (most critically acclaimed video games designer and producer), “Players are artists who create their own reality within the game.”

With the launch of new consoles in 2014, video gamers were really looking forward to the new worlds they could conquer and the new demons they could take on. Gamers around the world had high hopes from the much hyped titles such as “Watchdogs” and “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag”, but they failed to live up to expectations.

Nonetheless there were other titles which took the avid gamers on many a great adventures. A few of the best titles that 2014 had to offer were (in no particular order):

Dark souls 2:

Available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC

One tough game and that is exactly what makes it irresistible. The non-linear exploration is fantastic but lacks sequence at times, as in the vast variety of environments just do not gel in as well as they did in the previous Dark Souls. The lighting in the game is just awe inspiring. The game is impressive on 360 and PS3 but it just blows you away on the PC. Progress through the game is again built upon the player learning and observing the environment. One game you just have to have for its unbelievable tense moments, something very few games offer.

GTA 5:

Available on PS4, Xbox One and PC

Best game ever, the new version for PS4 and Xbox One has the same story but is optimized for the new consoles. San Andreas really comes to life in full 1080p resolution. While the PS4 version is slightly ahead on the graphics, Xbox One leads when it comes to various activities during the game especially driving around. The optional first-person mode enables you to observe the San Andreas life in a whole new way and you can always switch to the original third- person view when it comes to flying or driving. If you haven’t played it before and even if you have just give this version another try after all it’s the best game ever made.

The Last of Us: Remastered

Available on PS4

60 frames per second, 1080p resolution – one heck of a game on PS4! The Last of Us was an exciting game in 2013 and this one takes it a notch higher with its much more fluid game play. Once again the lighting and the environment is breathtaking especially when the protagonists enter environments reclaimed by nature. If you haven’t tried its 2013 version, then definitely try this out – it is by far the best game on PS4.

Other games worth a mention were:

Destiny:

Available on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360

A great FPS, tries too hard to be all these other games that it just cannot be. As a result, it become sort of a generic shooter that won’t come close to the infamy of the likes of Halo.

Don Bradman Cricket:

Available on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360

If you love cricket, do not miss out on Don Bradman Cricket. Big Ant has done a great service to us cricket enthusiasts by producing one of the best cricket games ever. PS3 and Xbox 360 releases had quite a few flaws when the game was initially released but the developers have really listened to user feedback and the PC release of the game has had majority of the flaws fixed. The support provided by the developers just makes a great game even better.

As it’s common with lists like these, there must be plenty of you who think we missed out on some game or included one which didn’t deserve to be here. Let us know in the comments below!
