HEC to Launch Pakistan School on Internet Governance

Higher Education Commission (HEC) is set to launch Pakistan School on Internet Governance (pkSIG). The inaugral four day workshop will be held from 5th to 8th October.

The workshop is being organized in partnership with Asia-Pacific Network Internet Centre (APNIC), Internet Society (ISoc) and Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

pkSIG aims to provide a comprehensive and intense course that will cover political, legal, economic, socio-cultural, technological and other dimensions of the Internet Governance within the context of the Pakistani national objectives. Among the planned activities are workshops, round-tables as well as case presentations.

The workshop will open to students, researchers and professionals from private and public sectors. The aim of the activities will be to enlighten participants on the best practices when it comes to global and regional Internet governance issues, settings, and processes. At the same time, they will learn more about the various aspects of Internet Governance.

The workshop will analyze different government scenarios and how they would impact the region and the national economy. A complete history of the internet from the early days till the current age will be offered. Speakers will try to highlight various topics like social media, local content and other relevant modern internet topics.

The introduction of ISoc, its chapters and membership requirements will be detailed alongside a presentation on ICANN and its supporting bodies and committees. The need for the development of policies for the digital age will also be stressed upon.
