Xiaomi has revealed an update to their existing Mi5 flagship in the form of Mi5S. Just like Apple, Xiaomi is also releasing a plus version, the Mi5S plus.
Xiaomi Mi5S
This time around Xiaomi has not opted for a glass body. Instead, the company has gone for a full metal body with even beefier specs than the original. They come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 instead of the 820 in the Mi5. They also feature NFC with 64GB/128GB of storage. The RAM in Mi5s comes in a 3/4 GB LPDDR4 package.
This is where the similarity of the specs end, as the Mi5S plus comes with 4GB/6GB RAM options.
The screen on the Mi5S is a 5.15 inch 1080p IPS display. It happens to be very bright, at 600 nits and it also has force touch mechanism in it, similar to Apple’s. The bigger Mi5S plus has a 5.7 inch 1080p IPS display but it does not have the force touch mechanism in it.
Xiaomi Mi5S Plus
The real outstanding feature Xiaomi is touting with the Mi5s and Mi5S Plus is their new fingerprint sensor. It is an under-glass ultrasonic fingerprint reader. Usually phones have a capacitive button configured to act as a fingerprint sensor. This one however creates a 3D impression of your fingerprint for additional security.
You can’t trick it with copied prints, since you’ll need the whole finger of the phone owner. You can read more about it here.
Xiaomi also mentioned the cameras on the two phones with eagerness. The smaller Mi5S has a Sony IMX378 CMOS sensor. The specs for the sensor are identical to the IMX377 in the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P and HTC 10. It features a dual tone LED flash and phase detection auto focus. It also records at upto 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution @30fps.
The bigger Mi5S plus has a 13MP dual camera setup. Its a similar setup to the Huawei P9 with one sensor capturing only in black and white to get more detail. The two sensors combine the results to get a sharper more detailed image with lesser noise.
The battery on the Mi5S is a 3,200 mAh unit while the bigger Mi5S plus has a 3,800 mAh unit. They both feature Qualcomm Quickcharge 3.0 fast charging solution. Both of them feature USB type-C slots
Smaller of the two, the Mi5S costs RMB 1,999 (Rs. 31,400) for the 64GB/3GB variant while the 128GB/4GB variant costs RMB 2,299 (Rs. 36,100).
The bigger Mi5S Plus costs RMB 2,299 (Rs. 36,100) for the 4GB/64GB variant while the 6GB/128GB variant costs RMB 2,599 (Rs. 40,800).
