OGDL to Sponsor 260 Need-cum-Merit Basis Scholarships in Pakistan

Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan and Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Wednesday to provide a total of 260 need-cum-merit based scholarships to students of different universities.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed, Chairman HEC, Dr. Arshad Ali, Executive Director HEC and Zahid Mir, Managing Director OGDCL witnessed the MoU signing ceremony.

Under the MoU, out of the total scholarships, 130 scholarships will be awarded to Engineering students, while the rest of scholarships will be awarded to students from different disciplines.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that funds worth Rs. 141 million will be spent on the award of scholarships, adding that as many as 70 scholarships will be awarded for vocational training of poverty-stricken students under another MoU — later signed between the OGDCL and the Hunar Foundation.

Briefing the media persons about HEC initiatives for human resource development, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed said that solution to all problems prevailing in the country lies in promotion of education. He said since the inception of HEC in 2002, more than 200000 scholarships have been awarded.

Zahid Mir highlighted the salient features of the scholarship programme. He said the OGDCL planned to spend one percent of their pre tax profit on their CSR initiatives. He also mentioned the organization’s scholarship programme last year which produced a great results, hoping that the current programme will also be of great weight and substance.
