KPK’s Biometric Attendance System Goes Offline Due to Nonpayment of Dues

Biometric attendance system (BAS) installed at various government departments in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been left dysfunctional after a cellular company disconnected their data services due to non-payment of dues.

These biometric devices for attendance system run wirelessly through 3G services provided by a cellular provider, however, entire system has been shut down by the company due to non-payment of dues, reported Dawn.com.

The biometric attendance system was deployed at Civil Secretariat, government hospitals, colleges, schools and directorates in Peshawar and districts.

Report said that telecom provider had agreed to provide service for Rs. 270 for 1 GB of data transfer per month.

However, after the initial subscription expired, the service was shut down and now, biometric attendance system has been left entirely dysfunctional.

It must be noted that Rs. 81 million were allocated by KPK government for deployment of BAS at various government offices in order to ensure regular attendance.

Under the project, KPK IT Department had given the biometric devices to all the government departments.

Initial contract signed with the cellular company included the service till September 2016, after the relevant departments were to clear dues for cellular services.

But since no one bothered to pay for data services, the multi million rupee project has now been rendered inoperative.
