Residents of few localities in Karachi might get some respite from severe load-shedding soon. K-Electric is set to receive additional electricity supplies of 52 megawatts (MW) from FFBL Power Company Limited.
This will help K-Electric manage its power load better during the coming months, especially in Ramadan, which witnesses peak hours of electricity consumption on daily basis.
According to its stock filing, FFBL Power Company Limited (FPCL) has achieved Grid Synchronization with K-Electric. FFBL is currently in its advanced stages to start the system.
At present, 72-hour Reliability Test Run (RTR) of Steam Tribune Generator of FPCL is in process with K-Electric. This will be by a full load rejection test by May 18, 2017 by FFBL. The commercial operation of FPCL is expected to commence on May 19, 2017.
The 118-megawatt plant, set up at Bin Qasim, Karachi, started test operations in February this year. FBBL is investing $265 million for the coal-based power plant.
K-Electric is scheduled to add 52 megawatts (MW) of power supply to its system due to the opening of the commercial coal-fired power plant by its subsidiary FFBL Power Company (FPCL). The inclusion of additional electricity will reduce the shortfall of the electricity during peak consumption periods.
Officially, K-Electric produces electricity from its own generation units with an installed capacity of 2,247 MW (including units 3 & 4 at Bin Qasim Power Station 1, slated for coal conversion). It also has Power Purchase Agreements for 1,053 MW from various Independent Power Producers, the Water and Power Development Authority, the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant and through imports.
