New Camera Technology Can See Through Your Body

A new camera that can see through the human body, developed by Scientists in Scotland, has “immense potential” in medical procedures.

The camera is designed in order to help doctors track medical tools, such as endoscopes, used in medical procedures.

The Purpose of the Camera

It will enable doctors to track tools used in a range of internal medical conditions.

The camera works by detecting sources of light inside the body. An example would be the illuminated tip of the endoscope’s tube inside one’s body, during a medical procedure.

The camera

According to early tests, the camera is capable of detecting an illuminated endoscope tube through 20 cm (8in) of tissue.

Tracking of equipment had not been possible until now, without the use of X-rays or some expensive alternate.

The new camera is capable of giving precise location of the equipment based on photon detection and measurement of time taken for light to pass through the body.

The camera is so sensitive that it can catch tiny traces of light passing through tissue.

This is not easy to accomplish using conventional methods. It can be very difficult to accurately locate the endoscope because the light beams scatter or bounce off tissues and organs.

The new camera is small enough to be used at the patient’s bedside.

The Camera’s Potential

Professor Kev Dhaliwal, from the University of Edinburgh, said the technology has immense potential in the medical field adding that

The ability to see a device’s location is crucial for many applications in healthcare, as we move forwards with minimally invasive approaches to treating disease.

The project was worked on by the University of Edinburgh along with Heriot-Watt University. The project is a part of the Proteus Interdisciplinary Research Collaboration which aims at developing new technologies for diagnosing and treating lung diseases.

Dr Michael Tanner, of Heriot-Watt University, said,

I hope we can continue this interdisciplinary approach to make a real difference in healthcare technology.
