Sindh Wants Phone Numbers to be Registered with CNICs

Last Wednesday, the Interior Ministry was approached by the Sindh government for the task of registration of cellphones against the buyer’s CNIC numbers. This initiative was taken to combat the rising cases of cellphone snatching in the city.

The Home Minister convened a meeting over this matter on 31st July. The meeting was also attended by stakeholders, officials from various telecom firms of the country and representatives of the Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA) as well. In this meeting, all the stakeholders discussed measures on how to curb the use of stolen cellphones.

A proposal was raised in the meeting to register a cellphone against a CNIC number so that in case of an incident of snatching, the victim may report the theft to the appropriate authorities, such as the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC).

This report lodged could than be followed by blocking the IMEI of the victim’s phone thereby making it ineffective.

In the discussions, the PTA Director appealed to the Interior Ministry to consider the likelihood of registering cellphones against CNIC numbers. He also suggested the necessary steps that would need to be taken by the PTA to examine this possibility.

As told by an official, this option was considered because numerous snatching incidents are not reported to the police, which motivates the snatchers to continue their illegal activities without any reason to feel afraid or undetermined. He also said that the reselling of stolen phones is also common because such incidents are left unreported.

  • Title says Phone number registered with CNICs? (which they already are), and article itself speaks about having phones registered with CNICs.

Do you guys know what proofreading is?

  • I guess that official has never visited local police station to report a stolen phone. He should try one as a common person in Punjab or Sindh (no experience in KP or Baluchistan), and then report back why ‘such incidents are left unreported’.

  • Saeen Sarkar ko Thana Culture change karna hoga, Shareef aadmi kabhi thaanay jana pasand nahi karta. FIR Darj karwanay k liay bhi jugar ya rishwat ke zaroorat hoti hai.
